Travel Movies To Satisfy Your Wanderlust at Home
Right now, spring is just starting. I’m spending my days teaching and my evenings relaxing on the couch, grading papers and hiding from the cold. What I’m not doing? Traveling. My feet are begging to wander, but it’ll be a few months before I’m back on the road.
But it’s all okay! While I can’t travel right now, I can imagine traveling. Not quite the same, but still fun. And one way to imagine your next adventure is with some amazing travel movies that showcase gorgeous destinations.
So grab your favorite snack, curl up with a snuggly blanket, and pretend you’re about to hit the road with these films.
Into The Wild

Directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hersch, Into The Wild tells the true story of Christopher who, upon graduating from Emory University, gives up everything to live in the Alaskan wilderness. This kind of impulsive decision can lead to disaster – but it can also lead to impactful life lessons and amazing experiences.
The Way

In my opinion, you can never go wrong with Martin Sheen. In The Way, he plays Dr. Thomas Avery, a man who goes to France after his son dies. As a spiritual tribute, he decides to walk the same trail his son died on, and along the way, meets others seeking to find their way in life.
Thelma and Louise

A classic film! Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, a classic car, and a road trip – what’s not to love? I’ve driven through the southwest many times, and I definitely think this movie captures some of the laidback and carefree vibes.
Hunt For The Wilderpeople

If you like to spend your vacations hiking, you’ll love this funny story about a grumpy uncle and his bold nephew exploring New Zealand on foot. The setting is gorgeous, the dialogue is amusing, and the story is gripping.
Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants

Perfect for watching with my teenage daughter, this movie is sweet, funny, and touching in equal parts. In particular, I think America Ferrara’s character Carmen and Alexis Bledel’s Lena learned the most about life and about themselves during their travels. It’s a fantastic example of how new experiences and new cultures can help you grow.
The Bucket List

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman hit the road in a last-ditch attempt to experience life before they succumb to their cancer diagnoses. It’s funny, it’s inspiring, it’ll make you laugh and cry. It’s also a reminder that we have to live, not just let time pass by until we die.
Nomadland

Another movie based on a true story, Nomadland follows Fern, who embarks on a nomadic journey after she loses her job, her husband, and her drive. She faces hardships, meets fascinating people, and learns her own strength and the depths of her resilience.
