Atlanta Adventures with Your Pack: A Family & Dog-Friendly Guide
Welcome to Atlanta, Y’all!
Disclaimer: While I love to travel, and I write on visiting places, I actually used to live in Atlanta for several years. The biggest city in Georgia, it’s a blend of the Deep South and urban energy. While life there has its ups and downs, for visiting, ATL (as the locals call it) can be quite fascinating. From its rich history and world-class attractions to an amazing food scene and surprisingly awesome dog-friendly vibes, Atlanta has it all.
A Dash of History: From Railroads to Renaissance
Atlanta was founded in 1837, originally called “Terminus” as it marked the end of the line for the Western & Atlantic Railroad. Ten years later, as the settlement grew into a trade hub (yes, unfortunately, thanks to the work of the enslaved population), it was renamed.
Historically, one thing probably everyone knows about Atlanta, is that in 1864, during the Civil War, General Sherman and the Union troops burned the city to the ground. While devastating at the time, Atlanta is nothing if not resilient, and the residents regrouped and rebuilt, turning Atlanta into the State capital, and a symbol of “The New South”. The city grew quickly, becoming a major Southern center for trade, industry, and transportation.
In the 1960s, Atlanta was home to one of the biggest players in the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King, Jr, and his role in the fight for justice became one of the city’s legacies.
But Atlanta’s story doesn’t stop there! The 20th and 21st centuries have seen the city continue to evolve. It became a major player in the aviation industry, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport now being one of the busiest in the world. Think about that – from a railroad terminus to a global aviation hub! Atlanta also hosted the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, which was a huge deal for the city. It put Atlanta on the international stage and led to a lot of growth and development.
Atlanta today is a dynamic and complex city. It’s a place where the past and the present collide, where you can find both Southern traditions and modern innovation. When you’re exploring, you’ll see reminders of its history everywhere, from the Civil War battlefields to the Civil Rights landmarks. It’s a city with layers, and that’s part of what makes it so interesting.
